How to Calculate Minimum Slab Thickness per ACI 318-19

ACI 318-19 Section 8.3.1.1 provides minimum thickness requirements for two-way slabs without interior beams (flat plates and flat slabs) to control deflections without explicit deflection calculations. When a slab meets these limits, ACI allows you to skip the detailed long-term deflection check — a significant time saving in design.

The Formula — Table 8.3.1.1

For flat plates and flat slabs (no interior beams, αfm ≤ 0.2), the minimum thickness is:

h_min = ln × (0.8 + fy / 200,000) / divisor

Where:

The result is rounded up to the nearest inch, with an absolute minimum of 5 inches (127 mm) per §8.3.1.1(c).

Worked Example

Interior panel, ln = 20 ft (240 in), fy = 60,000 psi:

h_min = 240 × (0.8 + 60,000/200,000) / 33
      = 240 × (0.8 + 0.3) / 33
      = 240 × 1.1 / 33
      = 264 / 33
      = 8.0 in

So minimum slab thickness = 8 inches (203 mm) for this interior panel.

When Deflection Control Governs vs. Strength

The thickness from Table 8.3.1.1 is a lower bound for deflection. The slab may need to be thicker if:

In practice, punching shear often governs flat plate thickness in the range of 8–10-story residential buildings. The minimum thickness from this calculator is a starting point — the full design may result in a thicker slab.

IS 456 and Eurocode 2

IS 456:2000 uses a span/depth ratio approach (Clause 23.2): l/d basic ratios of 26 (simply supported), 32 (continuous), and 7 (cantilever), with modification factors for steel stress and tension reinforcement percentage. Eurocode 2 (EN 1992-1-1 §7.4.2) similarly uses l/d limiting ratios with a reference reinforcement ratio of √fck × 10-3. Civora computes all three codes automatically.
